First race of the year was the WEMS Northern Kettle race. Ken Melville and Mike Laney tried something new as 2010 is gonna be a bit of an experimental year...whatever that means. So 6 Hour Duo riders beware...

Race started good Kenny got off to a good start as usual...bringin his Top Fuel around in 1st after the first lap. Lionized Mike Laney headed out on his first lap...after some gearbox problems...i know excuses excuses...new drivetrain is on the way...Laney dropped a position and Team Vesrah Lion Hayes was in 2nd after lap 2...The Team faught hard the rest of the day to claw back but could not bridge the gap...after a long tough fight 2nd in the 6 hour Duo was as good as it got...

Most importantly great day with great people...Wems staff top notch, put on an awesome event...more later...and pics soon

Living a healthy lifestyle havin fun with its Mountain Bike family. While havin fun the team has been able to rack up 3 consecutive Championships in the 12 hour open team category. Today all the motivation I needed to get out for a training ride was given by the wife. And I quote, "Why don't you go for a ride."

I left a dust shadow were I was once standing and headed towards the trees...lots of leaves down...remember peeps it can be VERY slippery under those leaves...the knee should be fine in a day or so.

Had a huge surprise waiting for me when I got home...Brian B with Roaring Lion hooked a brother up...got some much needed reinforcements delivered today...if the delivery guy only knew what was in the boxes he coulda been energized all day.

Been a little rainy in these parts...so we jumped on the road bikes for some miles. Snuck in 30 miles, weather cooperated. Kenny and I woke up the system with a Lion and headed out the garage. Lookin forward to 2010.

Blue Mounds of Fun

Last stop on the Team Vesrah Brakes tour for 2009 would be the 12 hour of Blue Mounds race. This years race coarse proved vastly different than in years past. The coarse had some really excellent smooth rolling trails...lots of deadly ups still, with much fewer deadly jagged rocks lining the coarse, some, not tons.

With a good showing at Blue Mounds Team Vesrah Brakes energized by Roaring Lion could win their 3rd Championship in a row.

The conditions at the onset of the race were a bit damp and muddy. No one better in the mud and congestion of the start than Kenny Melville. Ken flew through the first lap keepin it on two wheels to come around in 2nd place overall. Team No Worries Mon had about a 2 minute 30 second lead. Mike Laney next to go slopped around and gained a minute on the overall leaders. Now just a minute and half down to the overall lead Team Vesrah Brakes sent Jason Ano out on coarse. Jason absolutely blistered the coarse. The overall lead was snatched during his ride as Team No Worries Mon could not match Team Vesrah Brakes energy levels. That would be a big thank you to Roaring Lion Energy Drinks. Jason handed Mark McCrimmon a huge advantage for his lap. Mark also flew through his first lap furthering Team Vesrah Brakes lead. As the day went on conditions dried up. This just played into Team Vesrah Brakes hand as lap times came down for the entire team. The lead just grew the rest of the day.

Team Vesrah Brakes ended up 2 laps or about 2 hours ahead of 2nd as they went on to win their 4th race of the year and capture their 3rd 12 Hour Open Team Championship in as many years.

Late in the day Chainsmokers took the lead but Team Vesrah was Victorious at the end of the day. This friendly rivalry was descided by the narrowest margins. Team Vesrah Wins @ Metro Challenge 12 Hour

Team Vesrah Boys got together for an awesome day of mountain biking. If you have never ridden in Franklin Wisconsin you should give it a try. The Illinois boys (Team Vesrah) felt right at home at the coarses fast smooth winding layout. Hayes brakes fitted with Vesrah pads worked perfectly descending the ski hill. Manitou suspension front and rear made the task smooth. Sun Ringle wheels flawless throughout the battle. Huge thanks to Brian @ Roaring Lion for supplying the Energy for the weekend. (Brian B. send more!) Kenny Melville got things started with an incline run to the bike...made off for a couple laps, had fun the whole time. Mike Laney rode next and remarked how flowing each lap was, and it was nice that the coarse was kinda broke up in sections. Mark McCrimmon rode 3rd, again 2 laps. Mark rode a single speed all day and almost came in with the fastest lap time of the day. Kenny on one of his laps in the race was able to pick up fastest lap honors. The boys headed up to Northern Kettle for WEMS Race #2. Melville

lead the team from the start. We were in overall position by lap #4 and never turned back. Jason from Racine Cyclery joined us to make a team of 3 again. He did a great job for the team and is now hooked on WEMS racing. Rains came down midway through the day which changed the course, yet opened up a new dimension of challenge and fun!

It was a cold and rainy day. The team used Roaring Lion all day to keep us awake and ready for our stints on the bike. The race started off good with Mark McCrimmin starting the race. Mark came in respectable after his first 2 laps and kept us in the hunt. Mike Laney was next to ride. The conditions seemed to be drying up a bit for his 2 laps but Vesrah could not make up any ground. Vesrah was in about 4th place when Ken Melville took his laps. The conditions seemed to dry up a bit and then get wet again. After a long 12 Hour day and some tired riders Vesrah could only manage 4th place. It was great to get back to racing. Spun today on a bike with no wheels...climbed pretend hills once again...funny how the hills came every 4 minutes and lasted only 60 seconds...i must have been going around a pretend block and going up the same pretnd hills...Roaring Lion got me to the top everytime...race season is around the corner, should be fun to ride real trails...I can not wait...

Let me explain 30 /60...plan for 90 minutes on the Sta bike...got the first 30 in...then was out of the firehouse for a bit...came back...got the 60 in...now that is hard...plan for today was a nice tempo ride...stayin at about 85% the whole time...nice seat time...felt sluggish early then kinda found my legs during the 2nd sitting...glad to have gotten it in...Lion came to the rescue...

Workout was interupted by work...but I snuck in 35 minutes of intervals...1:30 off 30 on...I really need to get back on a bike with wheels on it...ok todays tip, in between weather riding...layers are the key...arm warmers, knee warmers, really help early in the ride...and if you start to heat up, you can shed those layers...remember when you take off that if you are riding with the wind, your return trip may be colder...

Cold but sunny Palos was today...got out for about 1.5 hours...Cold weather riding tip for the day...loosen up those laces, so your foot can basically slip right out...yea thats it...allows for circulation and toesies stay unfrozen...also keep the core warm and the rest shall follow...your body shunts blood from your appendages if your core is cool...so warm the core...

It is time to add a bit of McCrimmon's training to the blog as Laney has been inspiring all of us with his desire to ride. My goal this winter was to have fun while keeping my legs spinning and my mind away from SAD that can so easily set in during the winter months.

It was pretty easy to kick of the new year with two weeks in Florida working andplaying with the family. I was able to ride the road many days and also hit up Alafia State Park for some of Florida's best trails.

Back in midwest for the rest of the winter wasn't so bad. Work has been slow so I needed to travel a bit to find work. I spent 6 weeks in St Louis in which every week was either on a bike or in the "Y" spin classes several days a week. I was in Fenton, MO for work and the hills for training were incredible. I'd really like to get the Vesrah boys down there for some road and offroad rides.

I've been back working only 20 hours a week the past few weeks which is allowing daily rides. Ten of the past twelve days has been on either the road, mtn or singlespeed. Ken and Mike have also provided a few nice hookups as we get ready for another great season!

Boys got out for a ripper...Water Fall Glenn (AKA Argonne Lab Trail)...at the 5 minute mark of an hour or so ride in the cold Kenny M dipped his feet in freezing cold water (not on purpose)...Did'nt even slow him down...now thats hardcore...Little Mikey would have sat in the car pouting...the crushed limestone was mostly quicksand robbing any momentum...ever have to pedal to go downhill ouch...Quads were not happy...Kenny led the pack and forced Mark and I to tap the reserves to stay close...finished up strong to end on a high note...all in all another training ride in the books...sorry no pics...

Race Report

Team Vesrah Brakes final race of the season was held in LaGrange, WI., at the John Muir Trail system. John Muir can be very challenging with its fast narrow single track through deep woods, technical climbs, and sandy trail sections. The 12 Hour coarse would be the blue loop which is approx 11 miles. For this race Vesrah put Mike Peet on the disable list with a knee injury, Vesrah brought up Mark Junge to fill in and put the group to four again.

Team Vesrah Brakes put Ken Melville in charge of starting the race. The decision turned out a good one as Ken came around after his lap in the lead. Ken handed the lead to Mike Laney. Mike was able to lengthen the gap to second place. Mike then handed the task to Mark McCrimmon. Mark consistently held the fastest lap times of the year for our team, and put down another fast one to put even more time between Vesrah and second place. Mark gave the lead and the race to this point over to Mark Junge. Mark riding a single speed turned in the fastest lap of the day by any rider at the event while doing so opened up a nice gap between Vesrah and second place. During the next two rotations of riding Vesrah was able to build the lead to around twenty minutes. Team Vesrah Brakes wins the 12 Hours at John Muir by a twenty minute margin and repeats as the WEMS 12 Hour Open Team Champion for 2008.

The Melville and Laney families were in attendance to offer support. There is something very inspiring about those little voices.

Team Vesrah Brakes Completed 12 laps in 11 hours 50 minutes, logging over 155 miles, averaging approx 13 mph.

Thunderdown in the Underdown

Team Vesrah Brakes made there way to Merrill WI to race Thunderdown in the WEMS series. Vesrah arrived late friday night and took a night ride to stretch out the 6 hour in the car legs. One will ride many places in their lives...none will be quite like Thunderdown. Almost all of the 14.5 miles consisted of single track...some technical, most undulating and intensily demanding. Trying to be smooth and consistant was virtually impossible. Very fun descents, very technical, not Blue Mound killer slow down technical, but technical...some very technical and slow climbs. Anyway Vesrah Started the race strong with Ken Melville going first. Ken came around 2nd overall and 1st in class. Next to ride Mike Laney held the position and put some time on 2nd place in our class. Mike Peet next to ride has been battling a cronic knee injury and gave it his all on a very difficult coarse not to be 100%. Mike fought hard and kept us very close to the now leaders of Stiff Kitty. Mark McCrimmon always fast, reeled in 1st place and put some time between Team Vesrah Brakes and Stiff Kitty. Ken Melville with another fast lap increased the gap between Vesrah and 2nd place. Mike Laney also was able put some nails in the coffin of any last minute charge. Mark Mccrimmon last to ride, now in the pitch black finished the race with a win. Hats off to Stiff Kitty, they challanged all day and made it a very competitive day. This 4th race for Team Vesrah Brakes puts 2 wins, a second, and a 3rd in the books. Team Vesrah is looking forward to Kettle for the 5th race. This 5th race will confirm Team Vesrah Brakes WEMS Series Open Team Championship for the 2nd year running.

Stump Farm 12 Hour

Another beautiful day mountain biking in the trees. A fun coarse of single track with ups and down on the fire roads. Team Vesrah Brakes broke from the norm and started Mike Laney. Mike road a quick first lap and kept Vesrah close to the leaders. Mike Peet was out on coarse next blazzin it up. Ken Melville rode 3rd and held Vesrah position in second. Mark McCrimmon fourth to ride by a second had the fastest lap of the team...again. After 12 hours of racing and just repeating the original lineup Team Vesrah Brakes finished second to the local fast guys. Redemption for 2007. Team Vesrah leads the Championship and looks forward to attending the Thunderdown race for the 1st time.

Team Vesrah Brakes at Levi / Trow 100

What a beautiful weekend for the Team Vesrah Brakes family. There was absolutely nothing that could dampen our spirits. There was camping through a full night of rain, but the family returned that soaking with nothing but smiles and some blanket drying. The race course was spectacular, with awesome fast descents, little bit of sand, very technical climbs, and awesome views of landscape.

Team Vesrah Brakes finished the day up third after a hard fought day of racing. The race started off as usual. Ken Melville started again and brought Team Vesarah Brakes in at the top of the leader board. Mike Laney rode next and managed to keep the race close by following Chris Shotz. Michael Peet next to ride had a crash on one of the slippery but fun bridges, and also flatted somewhere out on the course, but this did not stop Team Vesrah Brakes progress. Even with some miscues Mike Peet came in with a respectable time. Mark McCrimmon next to ride pulled some distance back on the leaders. Ken Melville on his second lap put together fast lap to gain time. Mike Laney out on his second lap held our position even after the pain set in. Mike Peets second lap went much better, and kept third place in sight. Mike Peet was able to hand the duties to Mark McCrimmon with only a two minute and thirty second deficit to make up to take third. There is always drama in the camp. Mark was able to make up that time quickly and made the pass for third about thirteen minutes into the lap. Mark then was able to enjoy the rest of his lap making sure no technical miscues would put Team Vesrah Brakes out of the race. So again after a beautiful day with the families Team Vesrah Brakes finishes third.

The day was truly made when the Team Vesrah Brakes kids totally dominated the kids races. Every Team Vesrah Brakes kid walked away with a medal, as well as all the other competitors. Jason the event organizer along with the rest of the volunteers really went out of their way to make it a great weekend for everyone at the event.

Team Vesrah Brakes starts WEMS Season in the right Gear

Team Vesrah Brakes started the 2008 season off similar to 2007, Winning.

The first race of the season was held in Kewaskum, WI. at the New Fane Trail system, which is a neat place to race because of its relatively short lapping distance allowing for greater spectator participation. The trails themselves are a combination of fast rolling single track with occasional tight switchback type single track through thick woods.

A huge turn out of Eleven 12 Hour Open Team players lined up for the start of the race. This combined with the fact that Team Vesrah Brakes would be racing with only three members instead of the standard four man format would mean additional laps and some late race pain.

Early race planning called for each member to lap 2 times each, now this plan was subject to change if needed.

Ken Melville with his famous fast la mans starts put Team Vesrah Brakes in 3rd place after lap 1, and in 2nd after lap 2. Mark McCrimmon was next to ride and after his first lap put Team Vesrah Brakes in the lead. Mark followed up on his next lap extending Team Vesrah Brakes lead. Mike Laney next to ride 2 laps for Vesrah held the 12 Hour Open team lead and passed the duties back to Ken Melville.

Team Vesrah Brakes Ken, Mark, and Mike each extended the lead after the second round of exchanges. This turned out to be the trend of the day. After 5 stints of over 10 miles each Team Vesrah Brakes Held a commanding lap and a few minutes lead on 2nd place. Ken Melville crossed the finish line to win the first outing for Team Vesrah Brakes.

The Melville family was in attendance to offer support. There is something very inspiring about those little voices.

Team Vesrah Brakes Completed 31 laps in 11 hours 50 minutes, logging over 155 miles, averaging approx 13 mph.

Vesrah Training Ride

Team Vesrah was able to take a few moments out of their usually hectic lives to get in an Old Plank Trail road ride in the books. Ken and Mike raced out to the Crit in Matteson to do some warm up loops with Frank and Jim with Calumet City Cyclery. We stayed to watch the start and see Frank take the early lead. Did not have the time to hang around, but my guess is that Frank rode out front all day in the wind and still sprinted for the win.

Dino Tune Up

Team Vesrah tuned up in Warsaw IN., at a Dino Series race. The team wanted to get some seat time under race conditions before starting the race season. The first race in the WEMS series is coming up shortly. There are still alot of bike preperations that need to take place. 29" still needs to be built. 08 Top Fuel still needs to be built. Should be all together and tested shortly. Team is gettin out for some training rides and looking forward to getting the whole team together and having some fun, oh yea and racing.

Team Vesrah Brakes at Stump Farm 12 Hour

Team Vesrah Brakes hoped to roll into the Green Bay area early Friday to ensure plenty of rest for their 6th and final race of the year. This race held some extra importance adding self inflicted pressure for a win. Team Vesrah has won every race entered this year and could be a perfect season if they were to win at the Stump Farm 12 hour. The Labor Day holiday traffic did not make the early arrival possible. Team Vesrah did however arrive the race venue late Friday night to take a night sighting lap. The course was split between sandy singletrack lined with stumps that winded through the woods, and double track cross country ski trails.

Ken Melville once again started the race for Team Vesrah Brakes. Ken was holding the overall and open team lead for the first lap keeping his head down and pushing hard. With his head down Ken missed a turn late in his lap and lost the overall lead. Even with this miscue Ken was able to catch and follow the overall leaders by the end of the lap. Mike Laney tagged up and went out next. Mike rode with the overall leaders for his lap keeping Vesrah in contention for the overall win. With a tag Mike Peet was off on his lap. Mike Peet rode hard and held Team Vesrahs position. Another tag put Mark McCrimmon on coarse. Mark was able to put down the teams fastest lap and replace Vesrah as the over all leader at this point. With another round of laps by each member Team Vesrah Brakes held an advantage over the second place team Sandbaggers of thirty-one minutes at approx. the halfway point. During the next six hours Team Vesrah Brakes seemed to let up a bit and the Sandbaggers took advantage and started to make up some ground. With time winding down and only one lap left to fit into the twelve hour clock Team Vesrah Brakes still held a comfortable sixteen minute lead. Mark McCrimmon last to ride finished up the race seventeen minutes ahead of team Sandbaggers. This win hands Team Vesrah Brakes their perfect season and the Open Team WEMS Series Championship.

Team Vesrah Brakes goes six for six this year. Five wins in the WEMS Series and a win at the 24-9 mile National Championships 35+ category.

Team Vesrah Brakes Completed 16 laps in 11 hours 39 minutes, logging 150 miles, averaging approx 13 mph.
